Strong beginnings!

Listeners decide within 18 words or 20 seconds if they want to continue listening to a podcast. If you want to connect your message with an audience, then put your best foot forward with high quality audio and strong copy.

Think about your listening habits. Let’s say you are in a discovery mode, and you’re browsing through shows. You go to the show page, and you put on the most interesting episode. How long does it take you to decide if this is worth a full listen? Me, personally? My wife and I have a 5 minute rule for determining if a movie or standup special is worth our time, but I pretty much have a 5 second rule for podcasts.

Is this going to be thoughtful, entertaining, informative, sonically pleasing, OR a room full of idiots talking off mic? No offense to shows who are a room full of idiots, AND have good microphone practices. I’ll listen to that, but only if they capture me with reason to invest my time at the tippy top of the show.

So you have 18 words. How do you use them? As we start this new phase in Sound & Vision Podcast Production Service, we’re in the first 18 words of a new episode, so to speak. In honor of that, I’ll post more about best practices beginning a podcast. If you can’t wait for more posts setup a free consultation.
